The science behind a perfect smile

Unveiling the secrets to a winning grin

For 99% of us, a perfect smile doesn't come without hard work. Learn the secrets and the science behind a perfect smile here.

Unveiling the 5 Secrets to a Winning Grin

Have you ever wondered why a smile has such a captivating effect on people? A perfect smile has the power to light up a room and create a lasting impression. But what lies beneath that gleaming grin?

Today, we're diving into the science behind a perfect smile, unravelling the secrets that make it so enchanting. From dental aesthetics to the psychology behind it, get ready to uncover the magic that lies within your pearly whites.

  • The Anatomy of a Beautiful Smile:

The journey to a perfect smile begins with understanding the elements that contribute to its aesthetics. Our teeth, gums, and lips each play a crucial role in crafting that stunning smile.

The alignment, colour, shape, and overall health of your teeth are essential factors that determine its appeal. Dentists work tirelessly to ensure these components harmonise to create a mesmerising smile.

If your teeth are crooked then an orthodontist could help to straighten them through the use of braces or Invisalign. Alternatively, veneers may be a viable solution to completely reshape your smile. If you have discoloured teeth then teeth whitening can be very effective. If you have a gummy smile, you could take advantage of gum reshaping and if your lips are unappealing then lip enhancement could be your answer.

  • The Art of Cosmetic Dentistry:

When nature falls short, modern dentistry can step in to enhance our smiles. Cosmetic dentistry encompasses various procedures aimed at improving the appearance of teeth and gums.

As listed above, teeth whitening, veneers and orthodontic treatments are just a few examples of the cosmetic tools dentists can use to sculpt the perfect smile. By addressing imperfections, cosmetic dentistry can work wonders in transforming an ordinary smile into a dazzling one.

  • The Psychological Impact:

Beyond the physical attributes, there's a psychological aspect to a perfect smile that makes it truly irresistible. Numerous studies have shown that smiling has a profound effect on our well-being and how others perceive us.

A genuine smile signals happiness, confidence, and approachability. It creates an instant connection, boosting interpersonal relationships and opening doors to new opportunities. So, a perfect smile isn't just about aesthetics; it's also about harnessing the power of positivity and self-assurance.

  • The Science of Smiling:

Did you know that there is a science behind smiling? When we smile, our brain releases endorphins, neurotransmitters that elevate our mood and reduce stress. Smiling not only affects our emotional well-being but also benefits our physical health.

Smiling can boost our immune system, decrease blood pressure, and even improve pain tolerance. So, the science behind a perfect smile goes far beyond appearance alone; it directly impacts our overall health and happiness.

  • Maintaining a Perfect Smile:

Achieving a perfect smile is one thing, but maintaining it is equally important. Good oral hygiene practices such as regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are crucial in preserving the health and beauty of your smile.

It's also important to watch our diet, limiting foods and beverages that can stain or damage our teeth. Remember, prevention is the key to keeping that radiant smile intact.

Perfect Your Own Smile

A perfect smile is not just a happy accident; it's a combination of art, science, and personal well-being. Understanding the anatomy of a beautiful smile, embracing the art of cosmetic dentistry, and recognising the psychological and physiological benefits of smiling all contribute to creating that winning grin.

So, whether you were born with a Hollywood smile or considering enhancing yours through dental procedures, remember that a perfect smile is more than just a physical attribute. It's a reflection of your confidence, joy, and overall health.

A Smile Says A Thousand Words

Fixing Broken Teeth is Rewarding For Us!

Fixing Broken Teeth is Rewarding For Us!

© Emergency Dentist Sydney Smile Says a 1000 Words 02.jpg

A great smile is one of the most attractive qualities in the world. It changes the way people see you, the way they interact with you, and it changes the way you see the world. You should never hesitate to smile, but sometimes things can get in the way. If you’re concerned about your teeth or the way your smile looks, it can rob you of everything a smile can bring to your life. And this is a real problem, which is why you need to work with your dentist to overcome these issues as soon as possible.

Rewarding Work

Helping you get back your smile is one of the most rewarding things a dentist can do. As Dr. Oberoi from Emergency Dentist Sydney says, “What inspires me is when I really make a difference in people’s lives every day. I’m giving them more confidence in their smile. I’m helping them overcome years of phobia about the dentist.”

No matter what dental issues you have, your dentist has treatments that can help. And best of all, they’ll feel as good about the results as you will.

Fixing the Pain of Broken Teeth

One of the best things you can do to repair your smile is to get your broken teeth fixed. Teeth can break because of injury, poor oral hygiene, or grinding, and this can not only change how your smile looks, it can also make you feel ashamed and self-conscious. As Dr. Oberoi points out, “Often in the patient’s head, the broken teeth are a terrible fear and shame. But when you’re finished, they’re so happy and grateful with what you’ve done for them. After all that worry and shame, one appointment and everything is fixed.”

Fixing broken teeth is a relatively easy and straightforward procedure these days. Your dentist will examine your mouth and create a plan to deal with the problem. The treatment will vary depending on the condition of your mouth and teeth. But usually, broken teeth are covered with a dental crown, to give a flawless and natural looking smile.

After: Crowns and Composite Bonding

If your broken teeth can’t be salvaged, they can be removed and a dental implant placed into the gum. After a bit of time, the implant site will heal so a new tooth can be fitted into place. And once this is complete, your smile will look so good that you’ll forget there was ever a problem.

If you don’t want to have dental implants put in, your dentist may recommend a dental bridge. Dental bridges can be fitted over damaged teeth or used to replace missing teeth. They basically consist of two or more connected dental crowns that are bonded or cemented into place. Once they’re in, the replacement teeth are strong and secure, and they’ll look, feel and act just like your original teeth. So you can forget about them and show off your big, beautiful smile.

Cracked/Broken Teeth

It’s easier than you might think to crack, chip or break a tooth. Your broken tooth may have survived the trauma, but it leaves you with a damaged tooth that not only looks pretty bad but is also now prone to decay, infection and can further collapse if not treated promptly. There are quite a few treatment options for cracked or broken teeth including bonding, fillings, crowns, and veneers.

Missing Teeth

Losing a tooth or teeth can be really upsetting and stressful. Whether you lost your teeth in an accident or had them extracted by the dentist, there are many ways for replacement teeth. The treatment options vary according to the location and size of the missing tooth, but bridges, crowns and implants are all different ways to replace your missing tooth/teeth and restore that smile of yours. It can also improve your chewing, speaking and overall dental health.

Worn Teeth

We need to be careful of the foods and drinks we consume as they may contain harmful and corrosive acids that wear our enamel. Behavioural habits such as teeth grinding, biting fingernails or chewing on hard objects also wear our teeth down. There are many treatment options for worn teeth including veneers, crowns, bonding, and implants. We also have advice and ways we can fix those behavioural problems such as teeth grinding.

Crooked Teeth

Having crooked, spaced or crowded teeth is no fun especially because it makes it hard to brush, floss and keep your teeth clean. As you get older the long-term effects for these conditions can be very harmful for not only your oral health but your overall health. Orthodontics may be the best method to treat those crooked teeth. There is a variety of orthodontic treatments which your dentist can help you with.

Emergency Dentist Sydney Says:

If you have concerns about your smile and want to makeover your smile, don’t hesitate to call us. Our expert team will help you design a treatment plan that gives you a smile that you’re proud to show off.

The Tooth Friendly Foods You Should be Eating Now

The Tooth Friendly Foods You Should be Eating Now

Oral health is far more important than many people realise. It's certainly nice to have sparkly white teeth and a filling free mouth, but there are even more important reasons to make your oral health more of a priority.

The state of a person's teeth and gums can cause more than toothache (not that that is anything to be taken lightly). Numerous research studies have found that poor oral health can be directly linked to an increase in the incidence of cardiovascular disease, celiac disease, diabetes, sinus infection, rheumatoid arthritis, irritable bowel disease, and gastroesophageal reflux in some people. In fact, there are times when a dentist spots the signs of these serious health issues before a traditional medical doctor does.

Like any other aspect of our health, nutrition plays a key role in your overall oral health. Many are familiar with the common enemies that teeth have; sugary snacks and sugary drinks. But did you know that certain foods and beverages are actually oral health friendly, and consuming them more often will not only boost your oral health but help support your overall well-being as well?

Dental Friendly Foods

Here's a look at some of the best of these dental friendly foods and the benefits they offer your teeth and gums as well as the rest of you:

Probiotics

The term probiotics has become something of a dietary buzzword over the past few years, but the benefits of these 'gut friendly' bacteria are usually associated with improving digestive health.

However, as researchers explored that connection they discovered another possible benefit; a decrease in the risk of gingivitis and cavities thanks to the fermenting nature of these bacteria slowing the growth of bacteria in the oral cavity.

Live yoghurt is the best source of additional probiotics, and the calcium it contains can also help strengthen teeth as well.

Cheese

If you are a cheese lover, here's another reason why your preference isn't a bad one at all. In addition to the calcium it contains several studies have found that when you eat it the PH in the mouth is raised, lowering the risk of tooth decay.

Leafy Greens

You'll find leafy greens on almost any list of healthy foods you should be eating, and this one is no exception. Basically, the original 'superfoods', leafy greens - spinach, kale, Swiss chard, romaine lettuce etc. - are high in calcium, which helps strengthen tooth enamel and in folic acid, which has been shown to help prevent gum disease, especially in pregnant women.

Apples

Yes, apples are sweet and sticky. But as far as your teeth are concerned, in this instance that can be a good thing. They have a very high water content, so eating an apple can help wash away bacteria in the mouth rather effectively until you can get to a bathroom to brush your properly. Celery is great for your teeth for the same reasons, but perhaps not quite as much fun to eat.

Green Tea

Green tea is clever stuff as it has all kinds of potential overall health benefits. It can help improve oral health thanks to the polyphenols it contains that have been shown to help fight plaque causing bacteria rather effectively.

Water

Again, drinking plenty of water is almost always included in any healthy diet advice. In terms of your oral health not only is a big glass of water a lot better for you than soda or juice it will help rinse away bacteria as well.

Emergency Dentist Sydney Says:

By eating these foods more frequently you'll be healthier overall, and your oral health will get a big boost too. Couple that with regular dental checkups and you can do big things to improve your oral health in 2018 with very little effort at all.

15 Fascinating & Fabulous Smile Facts

There are lots of things that a simple smile can do, and helping you cheer yourself up is just one of them...

'Aw, give us a smile'

We could all do with some top smile tips right now! There are lots of things that a simple smile can do, and helping you cheer yourself up is just one of them. Don't believe us? Here are 15 fascinating facts about smiling that back the theory up:

1. Mood Lifter Even a forced smile can boost your mood - In a funk? Psychologists agree that even though it might be totally fake, forcing a smile can be an instant mood booster.

2. Born With It We're all born with the ability to smile - Most of the things that babies learn to do they pick up from others in their new world as they go along. Smiling - like crying - is not one of those things though, we are all born with the ability to smile. Want some proof? Even blind babies smile.

3. Practice Them All There are, apparently, 19 different 'types' of human smile - According to research done at the University of San Francisco in the States (yes, someone got paid to do this), there are 19 different types of smile that a human can contort their face into, ranging from the slightly terse, polite 'social smiles' (the ones that the Queen is very good at) to the more genuine 'felt' smiles that use far more muscles.

4. Ladies vs Gents Ladies smile more than gents - According to researchers this habit begins at birth. Girls will smile more and make more eye contact as babies and in general this continues throughout life. The one exception? When people are performing the same task or job, then they tend to smile in equal measure.

5. General Health Smiling can make you healthier - Smiling can help relieve stress and lower the blood pressure. Or at least that's what researchers say.

6. Colds Smiling can ward off a cold - Well, sort of. Smiling has been shown to boost the immune system, something that should help keep the sniffles at bay.

7. Pass It On Smiling is contagious - You know yourself it's hard to stay grumpy if those around you are grinning from ear to ear. Science backs this up too, as research has found that even when people are asked to try and not smile around other happy folk their muscles twitch into a smirk by themselves.

8. For The Ladies Smiling Attracts More Blokes than Makeup - Listen up ladies. According to a study commissioned by Orbit (the chewing gum folks) 69% of those surveyed found women more attractive when bare faced and smiling than when made up to the nines.

9. For The Guys Smiling Attracts More Women Too Guys - The people questioned for that survey were both male and female. And women also put a great smile very near the top of their lists of things they found attractive in men.

10. Face Workout Smiling uses between 5 and 53 muscles, according to its 'depth' so a big cheesy grin can be a great facial workout.

11. Friendly Face Smiling will help you make friends - Looking to make some new friends at the beach this summer? The smile, as, according to the experts this will make you seem more approachable and friend-worthy without you even having to say a word.

12. It's Easy It's easier to smile than frown - Smiling uses fewer muscles and takes less effort than it does to frown. You'll get fewer wrinkles if you smile more and frown less too.

13. Job Success Smiling will help your career - Want to score a promotion at work? Get smiling more often, as its been shown that smiley people have better career prospects than grumpy ones.

14. Invisible Smiles You can hear a smile - If you've ever worked as a phone rep chances are that the boss always told you to smile as you speak, even though the person on the end of the line can't see you. Why? Because science has found that smiles can also be 'heard' and if you smile while speaking it will aurally 'translate' into a friendlier, more trustworthy, tone.

15. Universal Smiling is universally recognised - While handshakes and hugs can mean different things in different cultures, a smile is a universally recognisable sign of happiness that is understood in any language.

The #EmergencyDentist Says:

All of this is great, but don't forget it's summer in Sydney, Bondi Beach is beckoning and there's a cold one waiting with your name on it. How can you not smile at the thought of all that?

The 'White Teeth Diet'

Scrap the Atkins, Raw Food or Paleo Diets, we love the White Teeth Diet. We'd like to share with you how you can eat your self to a whiter smile...

Take It With a (White) Grain of Salt

Scrap the Atkins, Raw Food or Paleo Diets, we love the White Teeth Diet. We'd like to share with you how you can eat your self to a whiter smile.

When considering a diet that is friendly to keeping your teeth white, it is just as important to avoid certain foods as it is to eat others. It's a little crazy but if you want to maintain that healthy white smile you were born with, or paid for, a few simple practices can help you out. There are three factors to keep in mind on this diet, chewing, saliva production and staining They all help to keep teeth healthy and white. Please keep in mind this isn't a whole diet you should live by, it's just a few simple steps you can take to keep teeth white. Let's start:

Do The More Often:

  1. Apples, carrots, cauliflower, green beans and celery. These are the firmer, crunchier foods that require you to chew more. They act similarly to a toothbrush and scrub your teeth while you chew.

  2. Hard cheeses. Similar to crunchy fruit and veg, they help clean the teeth by removing particles and preventing plaque build-up.

  3. Citrus fruits like grapefruit, lime, lemon and oranges help rinse your teeth naturally while you eat, encouraging saliva production which protects the teeth.

  4. Dairy products of course contribute to keeping teeth white. The lactic acid in dairy products will also help to prevent decay.

  5. Water. The purest way to wash away any foods that potentially stain your teeth.

Do These Less Often:

  1. Coffee and tea will stain your teeth.

  2. Soft drink such as Coke and sports drinks will stain your teeth and cause decay.

  3. Red wine is one of the worst for staining your teeth. That red wine smile isn't so cute either.

  4. White wine causes tooth decay. Just like red wine, white wine has higher than normal pH levels which increases your loss of enamel.

  5. Fruits like blackberries, pomegranates and blueberries will obviously stain the teeth.

  6. Sauces like soy or currie will also stain the teeth and aid decay.
    -  Hot Tip 1. Anything that stains your shirt will stain your teeth.
    -  Hot Tip 2. If you can't give up your coloured drinks, use a straw.

At The #EmergencyDentist Sydney we couldn't live without wine! #AfterHours of course. Some of us even drink our coffee through a straw, yes it's as weird as it looks. But, drinking in moderation, properly brushing and flossing and regular check-ups will keep your teeth healthy and strong.

The #EmergencyDentist Says:

For those of us who aren't lucky enough to be born with a pearly white smile, and for those who love a diet full of teeth-staining foods and drink, a regular clean or whitening from us can help you out.
